Guide to Enchantments in Minecraft: Everything You Need to Know

Enchantments are one of the most important systems in Minecraft. Well-enchanted gear can make the difference between life and death, mining efficiently or wasting hours, and winning or losing a PvP fight. In this guide, we explain all the relevant enchantments and the best combinations for each situation.

How Enchanting Works

Enchanting Table

The enchanting table is your primary tool. To use it, you need:

  • The table crafted with 1 book, 2 diamonds, and 4 obsidian.
  • Lapis Lazuli as payment material per enchantment.
  • Experience (XP) — each enchantment costs levels.
  • Bookshelves surrounding the table to unlock higher-level enchantments.

Optimal Setup: Place 15 bookshelves around your enchanting table with a one-block space between them and the table. This unlocks the maximum level of enchantments (level 30).

Anvil

The anvil allows you to:

  • Combine enchantments from two identical items.
  • Apply enchanted books to tools and armor.
  • Repair items using the base material or duplicate items.
  • Rename items.

Enchanted Books

Enchanted books are highly valuable. They are obtained from:

  • Fishing (with a fishing rod enchanted with Luck of the Sea).
  • Chests in dungeons, temples, and fortresses.
  • Trading with librarian villagers.
  • Enchanting books on the enchanting table.

Best Enchantments by Category

Sword

EnchantmentMax LevelEffectPriority
SharpnessV+1.25 damage per level🔴 Essential
Sweeping EdgeIII+area attack damage (Java only)🟡 Recommended
UnbreakingIIIReduces durability degradation🔴 Essential
MendingIRepairs with collected XP🔴 Essential
LootingIIIMore mob drops🟡 Highly useful
Fire AspectIISets enemy on fire🟢 Situational
KnockbackIIPushes enemy back⚠️ Use caution

Note on Knockback: In PvP, Knockback can be counterproductive as it pushes the enemy away, allowing them to use a bow or flee. Only use it if your strategy requires it.

Ideal combo for sword: Sharpness V + Unbreaking III + Mending + Looting III + Sweeping Edge III.

Pickaxe

EnchantmentMax LevelEffectPriority
EfficiencyVMines faster🔴 Essential
UnbreakingIIIHigher durability🔴 Essential
MendingIAuto-repair with XP🔴 Essential
FortuneIIIMore mineral drops🔴 Essential
Silk TouchICollects the block intact🟡 Second pickaxe

Important: Fortune and Silk Touch are mutually exclusive — you cannot have both on the same pickaxe. The optimal strategy is to have two pickaxes: one with Fortune III (for diamonds, redstone, lapis, coal) and another with Silk Touch (for grass, raw ores, glass, ice).

Ideal combo for pickaxe (primary): Efficiency V + Unbreaking III + Mending + Fortune III.
Ideal combo for pickaxe (secondary): Efficiency V + Unbreaking III + Mending + Silk Touch.

Armor

Helmet

Ideal combo: Protection IV + Unbreaking III + Mending + Respiration III + Aqua Affinity.

  • Protection IV: General damage reduction. It is the most versatile option.
  • Respiration III: Allows you to breathe longer underwater (essential for marine exploration).
  • Aqua Affinity: Normal mining speed underwater.

Chestplate

Ideal combo: Protection IV + Unbreaking III + Mending.

The chestplate is the piece that offers the most protection, so Protection IV here is fundamental.

Leggings

Ideal combo: Protection IV + Unbreaking III + Mending + Swift Sneak III.

  • Swift Sneak III: Allows you to move faster while crouching — highly useful for building at heights and in PvP.

Boots

Ideal combo: Protection IV + Unbreaking III + Mending + Feather Falling IV + Depth Strider III.

  • Feather Falling IV: Reduces fall damage by 48%. Constantly saves lives.
  • Depth Strider III: Normal movement speed underwater.

Bow

EnchantmentMax LevelEffectPriority
PowerV+damage per arrow🔴 Essential
InfinityIInfinite arrows (requires 1 in inventory)🟡 Or Mending
UnbreakingIIIHigher durability🔴 Essential
FlameIFire arrows🟢 Useful
PunchIIMore knockback on arrows🟢 Situational

Infinity vs Mending: They are mutually exclusive. Infinity is better if you don’t want to carry arrows. Mending is better if you have constant access to arrows and want the bow to never break.

Trident

EnchantmentMax LevelEffect
RiptideIIILaunches you with the trident (requires rain/water)
LoyaltyIIITrident returns to you when thrown
ChannelingISummons lightning when striking a mob in a storm
ImpalingVMore damage to aquatic mobs

Note: Riptide is incompatible with Loyalty and Channeling. Choose according to your use: Riptide for transportation, Loyalty + Channeling for combat.

Enchanting Strategies

Reset Method

If the enchanting table does not offer the enchantments you want, you can “reset” the options by enchanting a cheap item (like a book or wooden tool) with the level 1 enchantment (1 lapis lazuli + 1 XP level). This changes the available options for the next enchantment.

Level Economy

Level 30 enchantments are the most powerful but also the most expensive. A good strategy is:

  1. Accumulate levels by killing mobs or using XP farms.
  2. Enchant several level 30 items consecutively.
  3. Combine the best results on the anvil.

Librarian Villager

The most reliable way to obtain specific enchantments is to trade with librarian villagers. A max-level librarian villager can sell any enchanted book for emeralds.

Tip: If a librarian does not offer the enchantment you want, you can break and replace their job block (lectern) to reset their trades. Repeat until they offer what you need.

Enchanting on Servers like Quickland

On Quickland, the enchantment system works the same as in Vanilla, but with the additional advantages of Slimefun:

  • Slimefun Talismans that boost certain enchantments.
  • Slimefun Anvils with extended features.
  • Player trade — buy enchanted books that are hard to obtain.
